…SCJ’s method for teaching Hebrew, developed over a more than decade of experimentation
*Hebrew for body
English for goofy
It begins with a notebook.

Students learn to write the Hebrew alef-bet (alphabet), enforcing their acquired knowledge through the creative arts. We explore the initial process of learning the letters as an anatomical body-mind exercise, moving from the hands to the throat and finally to their entire bodies.

  • With their hands…they use the letters and vowels to draw pictures of English words that begin with the sound that letter makes.
  • With their voices…they sing the Aleph Bet song, and some fun, made-up songs to enforce the progression of the letters.
  • With their bodies…they play games such as Hebrew Letters Charades and Hebrew Soccer, and they act out little plays in which the letters are characters.
